Linux + Remmina + Password Safe – Re-auth Prompt Issue

Hey everyone,

we’re running into a strange issue with the Remmina RDP client and BeyondTrust Password Safe on Linux, and I’m wondering if anyone else has seen this or found a workaround.

What’s happening

When users download one-time RDP connection files from Password Safe and open them with Remmina, the connection doesn’t go through automatically.

Instead, Remmina asks users to re-enter their Password Safe credentials (the same ones they already used to log in to PWS) before the RDP session actually starts.

What we’d expect

Ideally, the RDP session should just launch automatically, using the credentials passed from Password Safe — no extra prompt.

Environment

  • RDP Client: Remmina 1.4.41 (latest)

  • BeyondTrust Product: Password Safe

  • OS: Ubuntu, Fedora, RHEL, and other GUI-based Linux distros

Extra context

This only seems to happen on Linux — the exact same workflow works perfectly on macOS and Windows, without any re-authentication.

Questions

  1. Is this extra prompt expected when using Remmina with Password Safe on Linux?

  2. Has anyone else seen similar behavior?

  3. Any known settings, tweaks, or scripts to make this seamless — the same way it works on macOS or Windows?

Why this matters

It’s a bit disappointing that BeyondTrust officially supports only Windows (mstsc.exe) for RDP.

Most of our users are on Linux or macOS, not Windows.

To be honest, this lack of cross-platform support is one of the main reasons why we’re not planning to renew the solution after the current license period.

Would love to hear if anyone in the community has managed to get full Linux integration working smoothly!

Thanks,

Mario

Hello @Doogma86

I have been able to get Remmina working on Linux.

There are 2 types of .rdp files you can download.

One from the direct connect tab in Password Safe, This will prompt you for your login username and password. The same account you use to login to Password Safe. When you open this file you should see a direct connect connection string for the username. You will then need to enter your password and click ok.

Or the .rdp file from the Start Session tab.

If Remmina is set as your default Remote Desktop app opening a .rdp file should show you the “Enter RDP authentication credentials” dialog  showing a long string of numbers for the username. Just click Ok and you should connect.

If using the rdp file from the Start Session tab you should only need to click the OK to start your session.

John
