Hello Everyone,

Is it possible to use the file transfer option via Remote VNC?

Hello dreis,

That would be a very useful function for Remote VNC Jump Method. Not so long ago i opened a ticket to BeyondTrust with the same question, but the answer was “Sadly VNC file transfer is not supported, VNC connections are limited to Screen sharing only”.

It’s a bit frustrating, because we have machines with legacy OS and the only Jump Method to use is Remote VNC.

I trust that someone has already found a solution to this problem and will perhaps share it with us.

Hello! The original RFC for the VNC Protocol actually has no allowances or outlines for any File Transfer using VNC protocol itself. Some VNC clients will offer a File Transfer feature but their either are using different protocols for this, or not using the standard VNC Protocol. If you wish to learn more about this, you will need to review RFC 6143.

Hence why our VNC Jump does not have a File Transfer method available to it.

@dreis Unfortunately, the answer is no—at least not directly. However, if the server has the necessary ports open, you can create a new TCP Tunnel for the server using port 445 (SMB) or 22 (SFTP). This way, you can connect to the server via VNC and use the tunnel for file transfers. It will be a two-part solution, but it works.
